Tommy Hanson, the nominee for Illinois' Fifth Congressional District, has voiced his opinion that the U.S. should refrain from getting involved in the Russia/Ukraine War. Hanson is set to compete against incumbent Democrat Mike Quigley in the upcoming general election.

"Get out of this war," said Hanson, Candidate, according to Facebook.

In a recent Facebook post, Hanson provided a link to a video from the Charlie Kirk Show. The video featured an interview with Jeff Webb, CEO & Publisher of Human Events and The Post Millennial, who discussed the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. "The war is terrible; what’s happened is terrible. I don’t think the Russians are leaving and they have a very powerful army. We should be looking at trying to be the brokers of peace. How can we make this as fair as possible? How can we save as much of Ukraine as we can?" Webb said during the interview.

Webb also addressed the historical context of the region, pointing out that countries within it have been "fighting back and forth for a thousand years."

On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated an invasion of Ukraine. In response to this act of aggression, Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin commanded the deployment of 7,000 military personnel to various European locations, according to information provided on a Defense Department website detailing the timeline of events in Ukraine. On the one-year anniversary of this invasion, President Biden's administration declared a $2 billion security assistance package for Ukraine under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. This package included ammunition and unmanned aerial systems (UAS), along with counter UAS and electronic warfare detection equipment.

The 5th Congressional District in Illinois is currently represented by U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.). This district covers parts of north Cook County and Lake County including cities such as Chicago, DesPlaines, Park Ridge, Lake Zurich, Barrington, Norridge, Elk Grove Village and Arlington Heights according to details available on the congressman’s website. Quigley, who has been in office since 2009, is seeking reelection to continue representing Illinois’ 5th Congressional District.

Hanson's website reveals that he was born and raised in the city on the North Shore. He has held the position of President at Hanson Commercial Real Estate for over 34 years. On his campaign website, Hanson emphasizes his experience as a small business owner and family man. His political beliefs include fiscal responsibility, full funding of law enforcement, and common-sense growth.
