Nicole La Ha Zwiercan, a candidate for the Illinois State Representative District 82, recently expressed her sentiments regarding her visits to various schools across the state. She singled out Hadley School as holding a special place in her heart, as it was where she received her elementary education.

“Over the past year I’ve had the amazing opportunity to visit schools all over Illinois to talk about accessibility and inclusivity with teachers and students of all ages and abilities,” La Ha Zwiercan said. “This time was very special because I actually attended this particular school when I was growing up!”

“Thank you for having me 33C Hadley School! I had so much fun and can’t wait to come back!”

However, her positive engagement stands in stark contrast to the challenges faced by Homer Community Consolidated School District (CCSD) 33C, which oversees Hadley School. According to Wirepoints, Homer CCSD 33C grapples with persistently poor academic results, escalating taxes and a perceived lack of accountability within the school district. A recent survey of student performance has ignited a demand for change. Residents are calling for urgent reforms in the education system. Data reveals that only 42% of students in Homer CCSD 33C are reading at their grade level while only 45% are proficient in mathematics. A breakdown by race indicates disparities within the district: 43% of White students and 40% of Hispanic students meet the grade-level standard.

Despite these poor student outcomes, all district teachers have reportedly been rated as "Excellent or Proficient." Meanwhile, operational spending per student has increased from $10,524 in 2010 to $13,827 in 2021. Illinois holds the dubious distinction of having the nation’s highest property taxes. It ranks eighth in terms of per-student spending in the country, which further aggravates taxpayers. Comparisons with neighboring states such as Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, and Indiana highlight a significant spending disparity. Illinois spends $17,293 per student, significantly higher than its counterparts.

La Ha Zwiercan serves as the press secretary for Senate Minority Leader Dan McConchie (R-Hawthorn Woods). She brings a wealth of experience in public advocacy and active participation in charitable committees. She was honored with the 2018 International Humanitarian Award for outstanding community service. Her campaign website highlights her unwavering dedication to community service. It underscores her election to the Village of Homer Glen Board of Trustees in 2021. During her tenure, she ardently opposed tax increases and played a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life for residents with disabilities. Adding to her list of accomplishments is her achievement of the title Mrs. America in 2022.

House District 82 is currently represented by State Rep. John Egofske (R-Lemont), who also serves as Mayor of Lemont. Egofske was appointed to the seat following former House Minority Leader Jim Durkin’s resignation. Ballotpedia's map illustrates that District 82 encompasses Darien and Lemont in both DuPage and Cook counties.
