The Village Board of Carol Stream passed a resolution to recognize and honor Kevin and Janet Greshock for their heroic actions in response to their neighbors' house fire. Trustee Mary Frusolone presented Kevin and Janet Greshock with a plaque at the Carol Stream Village Board meeting on June 19.
"It's absolutely inspiring what you did for your neighbors and what you've done for Carol Stream," Frusolone said.
Frusolone read the resolution recognizing and commending the Greshocks for taking lifesaving action when the home of their neighbors, Richard and Karen Mahrenholz, was ablaze.
The resolution passed unanimously, and Kevin and Janet were invited to the podium to receive a plaque and several other items including Carol Stream mugs and a challenge coin.
After being presented with the resolution, Kevin Greshock said, "We were just in the right place at the right time and I think anybody in our position would have done the same thing. We're just happy to have our neighbors with us."
The fire took place on April 21. The Greshocks heard a loud explosion around 2:30 a.m. and saw flames coming from their neighbors' house. According to the resolution, Kevin Greshock rushed over and met his neighbor, Richard Mahrenholz at the door. Kevin was able to overcome the smoke and enter the home, rescuing Karen Mahrenholz while his wife, Janet calling 911.
Richard Marenholz attended the board meeting to thank the Greshocks and provide an update on his wife while she continues her recovery at RML Specialty Hospital in Hinsdale.
Marenholz said, "I want to thank Kevin and Janet, first of all, for helping us get out of the house while it was burning. I truly believe we had a few more seconds to go before the flames would have engulfed us."
The Greshocks also set up a gofundme for their neighbors, raising over $15,000.
