Washington, D.C. — On May 31, 2023, U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (IL-06) released the following statement regarding the lack of meaningful electricity transmission measures in the Fiscal Responsibility Act:

“The electricity transmission measures included in the Fiscal Responsibility Act are woefully inadequate. We do not need to waste taxpayer dollars to tell us what we already know—if we want to fully realize the economic, reliability, and environmental benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act, we need to increase the rate at which we deploy electricity transmission. The study currently in the debt limit package delays that from happening.

“I’m disappointed my colleagues on the Rules Committee have ruled against an amendment I introduced with Rep. Mike Levin to replace this unnecessary report with legislation that would achieve what the Fiscal Responsibility Act only hopes to study. My amendment was based on legislation I have previously introduced and passed with bipartisan support last Congress.

“The fight for meaningful legislation to address the glaring need for more electricity transmission continues. In the coming weeks, I plan to introduce the Clean Electricity and Transmission Acceleration Act with Congressman Levin and believe it will serve as the consensus permitting reform package of House Democrats that prioritizes good transmission and clean energy-focused policy.”
