The Elmhurst City Council welcomed members of the York Community High School speech & drama team to celebrate its victory in the Illinois High School Association Speech State Finals in February.

At the March 20 meeting, Mayor Scott Levin issued a proclamation to honor the team’s performance and success this year, as well as the hard work and dedication of the students pursuing their extra-curricular interests while in school.

The council heard from three directors of the team and the winning piece it performed, “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse." Director Rebecca Marianetti explained that all the students had a deep connection with the piece, which was performed "in the round" by a 12-student cast. Marianetti said the competition taught the team about theater and storytelling.

"Our motto at York drama is, 'be the good,'" she explained. "And so, we always try to choose material that gives examples of how people, in this case animals and creatures and wonderful things, can be the good in the world. And I think that's something that we all need right now. And so, it was a very exciting time."

The team members showed off the medals they won, and the council congratulated them.

"We're very proud of the medal which we presented to you as well. But we are even more proud of the people and the performers that these students are," Marianetti said.

The team’s performance earned the school's first championship for Performance In the Round (PIR) drama. The PIR piece is an adaptation of Charlie Mackesy’s book, which is the story of a boy lost in the woods trying to find his way home. Along his journey he meets and makes friends with various animals.

Director Matt Bourke told the council that the team was excited to share the message of the beloved story with audiences.

The team consists of freshmen Eloise Hill and Tara Freund (stage manager), sophomore Alexa Klein, juniors Charlie Matias, Elle Kramer, Gio Santoro, Jack Davies, Noley Hanna, Sam Yungmann and Will Fischer, and seniors Luke Hanley and Oliver Roy.
