At the Jan. 23 meeting of the Roselle village board, the board considered several aspects regarding liquor licenses in the village and code pertaining to liquor licenses.

The board first considered how to proceed with licensing for Roselle Station Plaza who is applying for three different liquor licenses with the hope of getting what it needs as far as restrictions. The owners are applying for a Class J, Class L, and Class U license.

"The fact that we haven't used this very often, I wanted to get the board's ... temperature before meeting with the owner to ... give them our temperature and whether we want to move forward with that or not," Roselle Mayor David Pileski said. "It is very limited, I would say, in terms of its scope and whatnot. So while it seems a little bit unusual or maybe a little bit niche of a market, it does feel that we have the right regulatory steps in place."

The class J is for a fast casual restaurant, serving beer and/or wine on the premises and it must have seating for no less than 30 patrons. A Class L license is an unusual one, it was a class that was created for one business previously in Roselle and has not been used since. It is the nail salon license, allowing for retail and consumption of alcohol on premises in a spa/salon setting. There are several restrictions on this type of license. A class U license is the bar license, allowing for retail and consumption on premises for a business without food or a kitchen, and allows for sale of sealed containers of beer for customers to take home.

The council had no concerns about issuing a class J and class L license to this business as they saw no potential issues or misuse of it. They also agreed on making a slight amendment to their class U coding, which would allow the Plaza to have a karaoke machine on premises. The board will be voting on the final licenses at a later date when the business submits final and formal paperwork.

The village board also approved increasing the amount of class F licenses from 13 to 14 and the number of class T licenses from 16 to 17. Both of these were in anticipation of issuing a class F and T license to Mangy Dog Pub in Roselle in the coming weeks. Class J and F deal with beer/wine and liquor, respectively, for restaurants with seating for at least 30 patrons not including seats at the bar.
