GPS Presents Motivating, Supporting and Expanding the Capacity of All Students — Black History Month Event

 February 1

The achievement gap remains a stubborn problem for educators of culturally and linguistically diverse students. With the introduction of the rigorous Common Core State Standards, diverse classrooms need a proven framework for optimizing student engagement and facilitating deeper learning to help all children achieve at the highest levels.

Culturally responsive instructional skills have shown great promise in meeting this need, but many educators still struggle with its implementation. Zaretta Hammond comes to GPS to share cutting-edge neuroscience research to offer an innovative approach for designing and implementing brain-compatible culturally responsive instruction.

At this special event Hammond will inspire school staff and caregivers to ensure youth are seen, valued, and heard, creating a culture of care and belonging. Participants will learn how one’s culture programs the brain to process data and affects learning relationships. Discover the 10 “key moves” to build students’ learner operating systems and prepare them to become independent learners, successful in school and life.

Zaretta Hammond, MA, is a former classroom English teacher who has been doing instructional design, school coaching, and professional development around the issues of reading and vocabulary development and for the past 18 years. She teaches as a lecturer at St. Mary’s College’s in Moraga, California, and is a highly sought after national instructional coach.
