The DuPage High School Board of Education recognized two students as part of the district's 88’s Best recognition program during its Dec. 12 meeting.
Aiste Siupienius of Addison High School was nominated by teachers on the basis of her academic success, which included several advanced placement courses such as Calculus and Physics, as well as several honors and music classes.
"I would like to think, first of all, my family, my parents, they've supported me through everything ever since I was a little girl," Siupienius told the board. "They've come to every single one of my performances and truly have driven me to be successful in my academics. My sister is my inspiration," she added, saying that studying a master's degree program "is definitely something that I plan to do.
"I would like to thank you, board members, for giving us students such a great opportunity to learn and to have these amazing teachers by our sides and just really building a warm and comfortable environment in our schools," Siupienius told the board.
Principal Jack Andrews announced Siupienius' recognition, remarking that he "didn't know how" Siupienius found time for everything she did. Siupienius serves as secretary for the National Honors Society and serves in student council, veterans support and a number of other clubs, Andrews said.
Aiste’s teachers spoke very highly of her in their nomination comments. They complimented her work ethic and commitment to all of her activities. They attributed her success to her warm, positive attitude and her leadership ability.
"I cannot wait to hear about all her future accomplishments," Andrews said.
Siupienius plans to attend either Northwestern or Michigan, where she will major in finance, Andrews added.
Connor Nolan of Willowbrook High School was nominated by teachers, who nominated him due to his leadership qualities, dedication and skill as a writer. He was commended for his ability to engage with classmates and create a warm, welcoming environment.
Nolan is captain of the tennis team and is a three-time all-conference player. Coach Eddie De La Cruz, who has coached Nolan since middle school, called him "the finest student-athlete I've ever coached" at Willowbrook.
Principal Dr. Daniel Krause listed Nolan's academic accomplishments, including participating in Scholastic Bowl and Econ Challenge, and the Principal's Student Leadership Team.
Krause said Nolan said plans to become a software engineer, and will study, "either cognitive science, computer science or both" at either DePaul or Michigan. Krause congratulated Nolan, adding "you've more than earned it."
Nolan thanked the board and teachers, and his family for "cultivating an environment that I was able to thrive in," and he thanked the staff of Willowbrook for always being supportive.
"I've never had a teacher that I've even mildly disliked," Nolan added. "They've all been amazing."
