The West Chicago Elementary School District recently recognized the accomplishments and efforts of some standout students.

During the Nov. 17 Board of Education Meeting, the school board recognized Leman student Miguel for his accomplishments in cross country. During the regular 2022 season, Miguel Boney was undefeated, coming in first in every single race. He also set a new school record for the two-mile course with an 11:16 time. At the state meet, he took 22nd place out of 233 with a time of 11:07 and earned all state honors and the school’s first ever state medal in cross county.

"Aside from his records, his medals and his first place finishes, Miguel is a leader and a role model student athlete for his team and for the entire school. Both inside and outside of the classroom, he displays the Leman values," Leman Middle School Principal Maggie Lay said at the meeting. "At practice, he is always present and on time, if not early. He gathers the team and leads them through warm ups. He encourages and motivates every one of his teammates, regardless of age or ability. And his signature move that we are most proud of is when he crosses the finish line at the end of his race and then turns around to wait for and congratulate every other one of his competitors and teammates until the last one crosses the finish line."

At the meeting, Maurice McDavid, principal of Turner Elementary School, took the time to showcase the Turner Student Voice council with some of the student members. The purpose of the team is to create student-adult partnership in creating and improving leadership. Some of the students spoke to the board about what they’ve done on the council and why they decided to join.

The board also did a special salute to orchestra and music teacher Janet Sikma who had to step away from teaching. Sikma had voiced her concerns over the mariachi program before stepping back. An old friend flew in and worked with all of her old students to create a video for her honoring all the work she has done in the district.
