The Whittier Elementary School Student Council shared details regarding their organization with the Downers Grove Grade District 58 Board of Education during the Oct. 11 board meeting.

After the adult advisors introduced themselves, they gave way to the student officers, including the president, vice president, secretary, and service and spirit chairs. The officers presented the details of their Spirit Days, such as "Dress Like a Teacher Day."

The officers also discussed the charities that they had chosen to raise money for throughout the year through their fundraising efforts, such as the West Suburban Humane Society and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Each year, students who run for office pick a charity and run their campaign based on it before spending the rest of the year organizing fundraisers—such as the caramel apple sale and candy cane event to raise money that will be donated to their chosen charities.

The Whittier Elementary School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) also gave a presentation to the Board involving them sharing their goals and mission for the year. They also shared information on the changes they have made to school functions since receiving feedback from the results of their "End of 2021 -2022 School Year Family Survey." Changes includied higher utilization of email communication and more flexibility for in-person meetings, although virtual meetings were preferred by survey respondents.
