House Republican Majority has issued the following press release:

(HANOVER PARK) – Today, Jennifer Sanalitro, candidate for State Representative in the 48th House District, took a good government pledge to highlight the need for additional legislation to hold politicians accountable for government reforms and to institute more transparency for taxpayers.

“As we have seen with more than a dozen indictments of Democratic lawmakers in Illinois over the last few years, now is the time for change,” Sanalitro said. “I am running to help make government work for the people instead of the politicians, by supporting policies to hold elected officials accountable, and increase transparency.”

Sanalitro pledged to support several good government reforms which would give voters more involvement in their government decisions, including changing Illinois law to allow voters to recall unpopular legislation.

“The massive unrest over the SAFE-T Act has shown us that politicians don’t always represent their districts but, unfortunately, follow along with party leaders, against their own constituents,” Sanalitro said. “Allowing voters to vote to recall this kind of legislation would force legislators to be more accountable to their residents.”

Sanalitro also supports lowering the threshold to recall politicians who have broken the public’s trust.

“Under the law in Illinois today, only the governor is subject to recall,” Sanalitro said. “Because of that, we have a current sitting member of the Senate who was indicted for bribery and is still allowed to cash his paycheck and grow his pension while families in our district are struggling to make ends meet. I would support an amendment that would expand Recall to legislators and allow voters to recall officials who have broken the public’s trust.”

In addition to Recall, Sanalitro has also pledged to support term limits for legislative leaders to reduce power concentration and give more power to rank-and-file members to support bipartisan collaboration.

“Former Speaker of the House Mike Madigan created a system that benefitted himself, not the public,” Sanalitro said. “I would support leadership and committee reforms to reduce the power of leaders and force term limits to discourage corruption.”

Finally, Sanalitro supports comprehensive ethics reform that would empower the Legislative Inspector General and local governments to take a more active role in investigating corruption.

“It is well past time that Illinois cleans house itself instead of waiting for the feds to prosecute Illinois into a better government,” Sanalitro said.  “Pay-to-play politics has crippled our economy, increased our taxes, and forced families and employers out of Illinois. We cannot change our state’s direction if we don’t change our leadership and that is why I am running to help give our district a fresh start.”
