A Downers Grove village commissioner is alerting community members to a "maga" threat by a purported Confederate sympathizer who conspicuously misspells common words.

On Thursday, Leslie Sadowski, 38, tweeted out photos of an envelope addressed from "Your friends at maga" and to "Dupage County" with a Confederate flag emblazoned on its back.

Wheaton, the county seat, was misspelled as "Weaton."

The letter inside, handwritten on bright yellow paper, was short and cryptic.

"Fag Loven (sic) Commies," it said. "More to come for Downers Grove Library."

Sadowski said the parents group Awake Illinois, which recently opposed a drag queen bingo event for teens at the Downers Grove Village Library, is to blame for the letter.

"Let me be clear: they are responsible for this," Sadowski wrote on Twitter. "Their hate breeds hate. And it is not welcome here. To my DG LGBTQ+ community members, we love you. You belong here."

Sadowski went on to criticize DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick, who she said isn't properly investigating the letter. She said she has alerted federal law enforcement.

"The FBI is aware. Working on what more we can do," she said. "Leads have dried up."

The Downers Grove Library has been under fire for scheduling the event, hosted by self-described "raunchy" stripper "Aurora Devine." The event, originally scheduled for Oct. 11, was cancelled after the village received criticism from parents who believed it inappropriate to encourage teens to attend a sex show on public property.

Sadowski was elected to the Downers Grove Village Commission in 2019. She's an Ohio native who moved to Downers Grove in 2011. Her village biography says she "prioritizes data-driven decision making and improved communication and transparency."
