Op-ed: Dividing instead of uniting

After the speech done by our Democratic Leader and Chief, Joe Biden, people are in awe, hurt, disgusted, and more divided than ever. If you heard the speech, it felt like an attack on half of our country that voted Republican and more of an incitement to attack anyone who holds the belief to make America great again. As an Independent Alderman for the City of West Chicago, we have always held the people’s best interest first. Though, we may not all have the same political views, we discuss with professionalism and dialogue in our committees to reach the best option for our city. We are united together for the people we represent.

Unfortunately, being on city council for the past 5½ years, I have never once heard back from our current State Senator when concerning issues arose that our people in city would disagree with. Our city is 80% Hispanic and have very Catholic values, I would reach out on behalf of them. For someone who claims to represent the people, Villa has clearly decided to go off her own opinions and not of people she represents. Even when small businesses reached out for help, Villa would not help them. People that helped her run her last campaign and host her election night party in their business.

Quote from Cairo Events West Chicago: "Heather Brown was the only member of city government to see the injustice of the city's attacks against my family's small business and advocate on our behalf. She fought for us because it was right, even though she didn't have much to gain politically for it either, she stuck up for her values and helped. We do not tend to agree with Republican values; our family has always voted Democrat, but Heather's heart on politics transcends party lines. We support Heather."

We need to focus on uniting no matter the party, rather than labeling over half of the voters in the nation and in our districts as the “greatest threat to democracy”. They could be independents, republicans or democrats that want to make America great. People can change whoever they want to vote for every election cycle, but you cannot call people extremist for having a religious belief.

My family and I attended a “make America great again” peaceful driving parade, July of 2020. No one was breaking the law or threatening others. The message to improve our State of Illinois or country should be continuous. There is always room for improvement. To call out every person that voted against Biden as enemies of the state is despicable. They are our voters! Democratic, Independent or Republican, they are the people we serve.

When you are elected, you represent the people. You do not ignore people as Villa has. It is my passion for the future of our State, to represent, unite, and to make the State of Illinois great again, no matter what party you are on, we all have suffered enough. Having the belief to make our State better is the position every candidate should hold in their hearts always. Villa stated, “our system is broken”, but she has been in office for 4 years now. We must achieve better every year or in any position in life; but for her to claim the State is broken while the Democrats rule is quite the statement. Change is obviously needed to represent our District, I will listen, and I will act.
