Roselle Joins Coalition to Stop Freight Train Merger
A coalition of eight communities along Metra’s Milwaukee District West line is uniting to oppose the proposed merger of Canadian Pacific Railway and Kansas City Southern Railroad. The proposed merger is currently pending before the federal Surface Transportation Board (STB) in Washington, D.C.
Community leaders, supporters, and area first responders from Roselle, Elgin, Bartlett, Hanover Park, Schaumburg, Itasca, Wood Dale, and Bensenville are opposing the merger that could see an increase in freight train traffic by 300%. The formation of the Coalition to Stop CPKC was announced at a press conference this week in Itasca
In addition to bringing 6 to 8 more trains though the communities on the Milwaukee District West Line each day, the proposed acquisition has the potential to result in significant environmental impacts related to freight and passenger rail capacity and safety, including grade crossing safety and delays; motor vehicle traffic and roadway systems; and air quality and noise.
More information is available on the Coalition to Stop CPKC website.
