Illinois Attorney General Consumer Alert: Be Cautious of Pop-Up COVID Testing Sites
A nationwide shortage of COVID-19 tests and an increase in cases of the highly contagious omicron variant have led to the opening of many "pop-up" testing sites throughout the state. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul released a statement this week encouraging Illinois residents to be cautious of pop-up COVID testing sites.
Here are several key points from the Attorney General's statement:
- Pop-up testing sites are not licensed or regulated by any government agency, so the legitimacy of individual locations can not be confirmed.
- Testing sites partner with labs. Make sure the site you use partners with a CLIA certified lab.
- Testing sites may ask for insurance and identification, but do not give more information than required.
- Be cautious of sites that require out-of-pocket payments. Being asked to pay is a red flag.
- Report sites that may be fraudulent.
Both the Attorney General's Office and the Illinois Department of Public Health advise using testing sites on the State-sponsored list or those recommended by a primary care provider.
