Leaders with the League of Women Voters are planning a vigil for Jan. 6, in Glen Ellyn, a year after the riots at the U.S Capitol.

“January, 6, 2022, marks one year since the violent insurrection of our Capitol. This was the start of ongoing attacks on our democracy throughout the year resulting in many states passing laws that make it harder to vote. On Jan. 6, we will come together to build community, condemn the actions from the insurrection, and learn what we can do to help pass key voting rights legislation,” the group said in a post. “The public is welcome to join this peaceful, non-partisan vigil which will be held at the entrance to the Civic Center on Duane Street in downtown Glen Ellyn.”

Back in November, the group bragged about its leadership being arrested in a voting rights protest in Washington, D.C.

“Our Chapter President, Rebecca Simon, and member Karen Peck protested this morning, in Washington DC, to demand that President Biden step up and ensure the passage of the federal voting rights legislation. We are proud of them and their commitment!” the group said in a Facebook post.

The Nov. 17 Voting Rights Now march resulted in over 200 protestors being arrested outside of the White House.

The group noted they were proud their leadership was arrested for protesting for voting rights.

“This was the fifth and largest in a series of protests demanding that President Biden do all he can to support federal voting legislation,” the group said in a Facebook post.

The league added, “We are proud of our members and their commitment to #VotingRightsNow."

Simon and Peck appeared on Facebook Live after their arrest to ask followers to call the White House and ask them to pass the Freedom to Vote ACT.

In late 2021 Chicago Magazine noted Democrats hold onto power in the state largely through gerrymandering practices.

House Speaker Chris Welch said in a 2016 op-ed that the historical gerrymandering of minority populations in Illinois would be prevented by an independent remapping commission.

The Illinois NAACP has come out against practices to dilute the monitory vote employed by Illinois in remapping efforts.
