Midwestern University Recognizes Indigenous History of Campus Lands

25

National-Louis University issued the following announcement on Nov. 23

November is National Native American Heritage Month (NAHM), and people across America are coming together to honor to the rich ancestry and traditions of Native Americans, celebrate the countless contributions of Native peoples past and present, and acknowledge the influence they have had on the advancement of our country. The Midwestern University Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion joins the nationwide celebration of NAHM, and encourages the University’s campus communities in Glendale, Arizona, and Downers Grove, Illinois, to celebrate the contributions, customs, and cultures of our Indigenous students, staff, and faculty this and every month.

In recognition of the University’s existing and developing partnerships with Native communities in and around both of its campuses, Midwestern has published formal statements on the University’s website recognizing and acknowledging the history of Indigenous homelands and territories, including the land which is now home to both the Glendale Campus and Downers Grove Campus. These statements are intended to foster increased dialogue and understanding between the Midwestern community and Native Nations and Indigenous Communities and promote knowledge of our communities’ history.

“Consistent with the University's steadfast commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, Midwestern strives to build relationships with Native Nations and Indigenous communities through academic and research pursuits, partnerships, community service, employment opportunities, and enrollment efforts,” said Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., President and CEO of Midwestern University.
