K9 VOX SWORN IN AT SPECIAL POLICE CEREMONY

This week, the Schaumburg Police Department held a special swearing in ceremony to celebrate the promotions of three Schaumburg police officers and to welcome K9 Vox, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, to the department. In September, Special Operations Officer Josh Ladin made a trip to Northern Michigan K9, during which he spent time with Vox and selected him as his new partner. Ofc. Ladin and Vox returned to Michigan for five weeks of rigorous police canine training prior to being officially sworn in for duty. Vox has been trained as a dual-purpose canine which means he will be able to detect drugs, track suspects and missing persons and serve in a protective capacity.

Residents can help welcome K9 Vox to Schaumburg by voting for him in the Illinois Region of the $25,000 K9 Grant Program presented by Aftermath. To cast your vote, visit the Aftermath K9 Grant website and search "Schaumburg". Participants can vote once per day through Oct. 26. and are encouraged to share the voting links on their social media to drum up additional support for Vox. Winning agencies will be announced Oct. 28.

VILLAGE EMPLOYEE STEPS UP TO MAINTAIN SCHAUMBURG BARN'S INTERGENERATIONAL GARDEN

Over the past decade, the Intergenerational Garden at the Schaumburg Barn, 231 S. Civic Dr., has remained a vital source of fresh produce for seniors in the community. A variety of vegetables are grown each year including peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, carrots, green beans, onions and herbs.

Employee retirements and a leave of absence left management and maintenance of the 2021 garden up to a new set of employees and volunteers. Without hesitation, Berenice Garcia, permits clerk in the village’s Community Development Department, stepped up to lead the garden. Garcia visited the garden 1-2 times a week during her lunch hour and even on weekends to make sure the garden was being taken care of properly. Her son Jesus and other family members even joined in during their spare time to help. Garcia also recruited other village employees and senior volunteers to assist with watering, weeding, thinning and harvesting efforts. The hard work and efforts of the entire team of volunteers helped hundreds of seniors get access to fresh veggies this season.

“It meant a lot to me that the vegetables I harvested were going to seniors in the community. The excitement and happiness they showed when receiving the fresh produce let me know that my work was making a difference,” Garcia said.

The village applauds Berenice Garcia on her initiative and is grateful to everyone who played a part in the Intergenerational Garden’s success. For more information about volunteering at The Barn or the garden, contact Marina Lvovich or dial 311 in Schaumburg.

FALL MAILBOX INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE

The village's Engineering and Public Works Department reminds residents that fall is a great time to inspect and maintain your mailbox to make sure it is ready for this coming winter. There are several items to review and inspect on your mailbox:
  1. Measure your mailbox to ensure the box is 12” behind the curb and that the bottom of the box is 36”-42” above the street.
  2. Post is securely placed in an anchor or in concrete. The mailbox doesn’t move (forward, backward, side-to-side) and is standing straight.
  3. All components of the post are secure including decorative items, house numbers, etc.
  4. The box mounting bracket or plate is secured to the post.
  5. The mailbox is secured to the mounting bracket or plate and is level in all directions.
  6. Check the functionality of the door to make sure it opens and closes properly and remains closed when shut.
Maintaining your mailbox will not only improve its appearance but will also allow for it to withstand snowplowing operations. As a reminder, the village will only repair or replace your mailbox or post if it is struck by a village snowplow and has been installed and maintained properly. Your mailbox needs to withstand snow that is plowed onto the parkway. For more information, visit the village's website.

CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS

Summit Drive Improvements

Crews continue concrete and underground work on Summit Dr. between Wise Rd. and Weathersfield Way. Traffic access will be maintained, however, motorists can expect some occasional delays due to truck maneuvering. Some driveways have been removed; affected homeowners will need to park on the street. Work on this section of Summit Dr. is expected to be completed by mid-November.

Meacham Road at Tower Road Pavement Patching

Crews have set lane closures for phase 1 of concrete pavement patching in the right lane of northbound Meacham Rd. just south of McConnor Pkwy. and the right turn lane of eastbound Tower Rd. onto southbound Meacham Rd. Additional daytime second-lane closures will occur as needed weekdays between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to allow crews to work. Closures for phase 1 will remain in place through the end of next week before switching to phase 2.

Meacham Road at Algonquin Road Intersection Improvements

Crews will continue working on the storm sewer and installing the remaining stone base for the new pavement during the upcoming week. Utility crews will be working on Meacham Rd. to adjust pipes and structures to meet new roadway and pedestrian path elevations. Please continue to watch for trucks entering and leaving work zones. Expect daily single-lane closures between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

National Parkway - Woodfield Road to American Lane

The current traffic configuration on National Pkwy, continues this week with one northbound lane open from Woodfield Rd. to American Ln. The northbound lane has shifted from the existing pavement on the west side of National Pkwy. to the new pavement on the east side. Southbound lanes on National Pkwy. between American Ln. and Woodfield Rd. are closed with traffic continuing to be detoured. This configuration is scheduled to remain until mid-November.
