City of Darien recently issued the following announcement

Weekly eNews - September 30, 2021

City to discuss all cart service in preparation for a new garbage/refuse/yard waste contract effective April 1, 2022

City of Darien Summary - Garbage/Recycling/Yard waste Proposals September 15, 2021
  • The City’s current contract with Waste Management expires on March 31, 2022. The City solicited proposals for a new 5-year contract and received three proposals. (LRS, Waste Management, Groot)
  • The request for proposal prepared by the city included pricing for the same program the city uses now (sticker/cart hybrid), and an alternative for an all cart program with unlimited garbage/yard waste/recycling.
  • All three proposals for the current hybrid program included a sticker price significantly higher than the current sticker price. The current refuse/yard waste sticker price is $3.91. The 3 proposed sticker prices are:
  • LRS – $6.26 per sticker
  • Groot – fixed base fee of $13 per month (seniors monthly fixed base fee is $5) plus $4 per sticker
  • Waste Management – base fixed fee of $5.25 plus $6.50 per sticker
  • All three companies provided proposals for the alternative all-cart program. LRS submitted the best price, which includes a 65 or 95 cart for $20.95 per month for unlimited garbage/recycling/yard waste pickup. The senior citizen (65 and older) price is $10 per month for a smaller (limited refuse) 35-gallon cart. These prices also include one bulk item per week included with the unlimited pickup and a food composting program.
  • LRS would bill residents directly.
  • The final step is for the city and LRS to develop the proposal into a formal contract for approval by the city council. This City Council will review this item at the October 4, 2021 Council meeting.

Planning and Zoning Commission Meeting Cancelled
Due to the lack of agenda items, the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting scheduled for Wednesday, October 6 has been cancelled.

Fall Home Maintenance
Fall is the perfect time to take care of the little things that can make a big difference for you and your home. Most of the items listed below are well within the average person's ability. But even if you choose to have a professional handle them, it's worth the expense. You'll save money -- and maybe even your life.

  • Check for damage to your roof, and clean gutters and downspouts to keep debris from accumulating. This is especially important during the fall season to keep leaves from building up in gutters.
  • Keep flammable materials, including all lawn and power equipment, away from water heaters and wiring in the basement.
  • Insulate water pipes in areas exposed to cold temperatures, and turn up the thermostat during extra cold periods.
  • Check and repair caulking around doors and windows that show signs of deterioration.
  • Have your furnace cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified technician.
  • Check caulking around showers, bathtubs, sinks and toilet bases; and make repairs as needed.
  • Have your chimney cleaned and maintained annually by a professional.
  • Clean and/or replace your furnace filter.
  • Clean the clothes dryer exhaust duct and space under the dryer. Remove all lint, dust, and pieces of material.
  • Keep a multi-purpose fire extinguisher accessible, filled and ready for operation.
  • Store firewood away from home to prevent infestations by termites and other insects
House Mouse Identification
Did you know that mice are extremely sensitive to temperature and pressure changes? The moment the seasons begin to change, mice can sense it. When mice sense fall coming, they know instinctually that winter is coming. Mice don’t hibernate or enter torpor during winter. If they want to survive until spring, they have to find a place to keep warm all winter long. If you give them a chance, that place could be your home. Mice seem more active in fall because they’re frantically trying to outrun winter. They need to sneak their way into warm, hidden places where they won’t freeze. Their quest to keep warm keeps them active longer, later, and in places where you won’t normally see them. Mouse infestations are extremely common in fall. You’ll see them in your basement, attic, crawl spaces, garage, and even your pantry or cupboards. If you see one, you can bet there are more nearby. For more information on house mouse prevention and control please visit the Illinois Department of Public Health.
