Week ending Aug. 21: longest patent process for Itasca inventors

Patent 12

The longest time between a patent being filed and granted in the week ending Aug. 21 in Itasca was 1,763 days, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The patent application was filed by Accertify, Inc. for a systems and methods for recognizing a device and/or an instance of an app invoked on a device. It was filed on Oct. 19, 2016 before being approved on Aug. 17, 2021.

Though patents are required for inventions and products, the granting of a patent is not a guarantee for success. Dennis Crouch, co-director of the Center for Intellectual Property & Entrepreneurship said roughly 50 percent of patents expire prematurely due to costs.

There were two patents granted for Itasca inventors in the week ending Aug. 21.
