August Service Project - Thursday, August 26, 2021
IYC Warrenville and The Gardenworks Project
Our next Lawyers Lending a Hand will take place on Thursday, August 26th at 5:30 at IYC Warrenville. The hosting charity is called The Gardenworks Project. It is a non-profit organization working to improve food access and food security to neighbors in need. They plan to install raised bed gardens for the Illinois Youth Center. Installing raised bed gardens will create greater food access and food quality to juveniles who are in custody while also providing educational opportunities in horticulture and agriculture's in association with classes through College of DuPage. This is very similar to the Hope's Garden program at the jail implemented by Sheriff Mendrick in 2019 and expanded this year.
We will need 10 volunteers to help build 10 four by 8 foot cedar raised beds install compost soil and a growing medium and plant a fall crop for a fall harvest. They insist we can do this in 90 minutes. They have the procedure worked out in every detail.
Volunteers should email Judge Paul Marchese at p.marchese@18thjudicial.org with their name and cell phone number.
PLEASE NOTE: Volunteers cannot bring a cell phone on their person into the youth center and must present a valid ID for entry.
