Former Republican state Rep. Jeanne Ives wants to see Illinois public school teachers concentrate on doing the job they were meant to do.

“According to Pacific Research, among high school teachers overall there are 87 Democrats for every 13 Republicans and now we are mandating these teachers teach our kids what is and isn’t fake news,” Ives posted on Facebook. “Meanwhile, only 1/3 of Illinois public school students read or do math at grade level. Only in Illinois.”

With Gov. J.B. Pritzker having also recently signed off on legislation that amends the state’s school code to include a media literacy unit, Republican lawmakers worry House Bill 234 could soon lead to out-of-balance school boards picking what media outlets are reputable.

State Rep. Adam Niemerg has wasted little time blasting the legislation as an “anti-Trump, anti-conservative” reactionary bill, adding he sees it as an attempt by the left “to get into our school systems at a young age and teach them the means of mainstream media.”

The legislation went into effect across the state immediately after gaining the governor’s signature.
