Veteran GOP lawmaker Rep. Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) insists Senate Bill 539 just offers more of the same when it comes to ethics reform in Springfield.
“I said it in 2019 and nothing has changed - the watered-down ‘reforms’ we’ve seen pass the legislature have done nothing but sweep real ethics reform under the rug,” Grant said in a post to Facebook. “Enough is enough. Today, I joined my colleagues in calling on Gov. Pritzker to issue an amendatory veto to SB 539 to enact meaningful ethics reform.
In a letter sent to Pritzker, the group argued “passing comprehensive ethics reform and anti-corruption safeguards are a priority for the Republican caucus, and should be for all elected officials in the state of Illinois.” The letter added “with the unsavory history of Illinois political corruption and the recent far-reaching federal investigations, it is past time to strengthen our ethics laws.”
The letter comes as Legislative Inspector General (LIG) Carol Pope is stepping down from her post and in doing so cited SB 539 as one of the primary reasons for leaving. She said the bill that now sits on the governor’s desk doesn't do enough to give the LIG independence from the legislative body she would investigate.
Grant said she agrees with Pope about the bill falling far short from what’s needed to clean up corruption in Springfield.
