Lombard police Sgt. Jason Chudzinski is worried about what an area of the city may be deteriorating to after a Chicago man recently charged in the killing of a 7-year-old girl was known to hang out there.

“One of the vehicles hit in the escape was a blue Charger stolen out of Chicago and the owner is a Plainfield resident,” Chudzinski said. “CPD would not take the stolen report from the victim when it was stolen because he could not produce proof of ownership. Also located were numerous key fobs to various types of vehicles. I would not be surprised if there are a bunch of stolen vehicles located around Foxworth Complex."

The Lombard Police Department ultimately played a major role in the apprehension of Marion Lewis, 18, who, in addition to charges in the death of 7-year-old Jaslyn Adams, now faces three counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault of a police officer.

Adams was fatally wounded at a McDonald’s drive-thru in Chicago back on April 19. At the time, Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said others were also suspected of being involved but remained at large.

Lewis was known to hang out at the Clover Creek Apartments complex in Lombard. Police say he was taken into custody while trying to steal a family’s car on the Eisenhower Expressway while eluding officers. He suffered several gunshot wounds from the police, but is expected to survive.

Lombard Police Chief Roy Newton has recently spoken out about some components of the criminal justice system he argues simply don’t do the job they should.

“There’s no secret the Cook County Court System and bail system has been more open to releasing offenders on a lower bond, or no bond,” Newton told the DuPage Policy Journal. “That part is frustrating, when a department picks up an offender for a certain crime and they have a monitoring bracelet on their ankle from being released a few days ago. People that are given bonds should have to come up with that amount to be released. Those offenders go out and continue to commit more crimes, not just in Lombard but all adjacent suburbs to the city.”
