Lake County resident George Weckbacher is intent on getting to the bottom of what happened in the race for DuPage County auditor.
“I’m looking for information on the DuPage County systems,” Weckbacher told the DuPage Policy Journal. “I put in a request for information through FOIA. Specifically, I’m looking at their adjudication of mail-in ballots.”
In a race where a full recount was ordered after former DuPage County Auditor Bob Grogan was originally declared the loser to Democrat Willie White by 75 votes, Weckbacher wants answers about the process.
“There’s a process if the outside envelope doesn’t have the right information there’s a process where they cure it and notify the voter to try to get it corrected before the ballot is submitted,” Weckbacher added. “Adjudication is after ballots have been open and run through a machine. Someone has to go in and adjudicate, telling the computer this is the way the vote has to go. My concern is DuPage County has not listed the adjudication, so I’ve requested that.”
Even after White was sworn in on Dec. 1, Grogan filed suit seeking a full recount. His court filing comes after he first filed a petition in DuPage against White and County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek, requesting that he be declared the winner based on “irregularities” he alleges including election judges not initialing ballots and more ballots being cast than the number of people who voted
Weckbacher has been pushing for what he sees as a voting system with greater integrity. Earlier this month, he met with the Illinois State Board of Elections to discuss ideas.
