Glenbard School District 87 Superintendent David Larson is encouraging teachers to “nudge” students to get vaccinated.
“As you are able, please take the time to encourage, nudge and challenge each eligible student to attend one of these clinics to be vaccinated,” Larson wrote.
Larson’s encouragement runs counter to recent findings reporting Swedish data in The New England Journal of Medicine in which children who attended school without masks were found to be largely impervious to Covid.
Counter to schools in DuPage County, in Sweden fewer precautions were taken at the onset of the pandemic. Social distancing was encouraged, masks were not used and children remanded in school.
“I believe, given the unpredictability of this pandemic, it will be critical for as many students as possible to be vaccinated by August as we start the next school year,” Glenbard 87 Superintendent David Larson said in a memo.
Larson noted teachers should target the 5,292 students in the school district who are 16 or older.
“The vaccine has only been tested in children above 16 years of age. Therefore, at this time, WHO does not recommend vaccination of children below 16 years of age, even if they belong to a high-risk group,“ The World Health Organization said in press release.
Glenbard School District 87 is home to 8,029 students and includes four high schools- Glenbard East, Glenbard North, Glenbard South and Glenbard West.
Larson noted the location of clinics where students could be vaccinated.
In Virginia colleges were recently granted the authority to require students to be vaccinated.
