A bill introduced by state Sen. Karina Villa (D-West Chicago) would demand practical measures to ensure nursing home residents are treated well.
Villa on Feb. 26 introduced Senate Bill 1633 that would amend the Nursing Home Care Act in requiring that residents “be treated with courtesy and respect” and that “their human and civil rights” be maintained, according to the Illinois General Assembly website.
“When we have loved ones living in a nursing home, we should have full confidence that they will be cared for with courtesy and proper medical practices,” Villa said on Facebook. “This initiative will help give nursing home residents the opportunity to enjoy the highest quality of life.”
Among the measure’s stipulations is the requirement that residents “not perform labor or services for a facility unless those activities are included for therapeutic purposes.” Under the bill, outpatient mental health service facilities must “have a written internal grievance procedure to allow residents to voice their concerns,” a press release said.
“All applicable patient rights under the Medical Patient Rights Act would also apply to residents under the Nursing Home Care Act,” the press release said.
SB 1633 has been sent to the Senate Assignments Committee.
