Illinois State House District 41 issued the following announcement on Oct. 9.

Rep. Grant Wehrli announced on Friday that a coordinated summer effort to put unclaimed funds back into the hands of rightful owners in the 41st District led to nearly $3 in funds being returned to constituents.

“At any given time, the Illinois State Treasurer holds billions of dollars in unclaimed funds for Illinoisans,” said Wehrli. “The State holds these lost funds until they are claimed by either the original owner or their heirs.”

According to Wehrli, unclaimed property can include checking and savings accounts, uncashed wage and payroll checks, uncashed stock dividends and stock certificates, insurance payments, utility deposits, customer deposits, accounts payable, credit balances, refund checks, money orders, traveler’s checks, mineral proceeds, court deposits, uncashed death benefit checks and life insurance proceeds.

“This summer, my intern Haley was given an assignment to work with the Treasurer’s Office and try to get as much of the unclaimed money back into the hands of rightful owners in the 41st District as possible,” Wehrli added. “I’m thrilled to announce that through Haley’s hard work and in collaboration with the IL Treasurer’s I-Cash division, $2,833,653.60 has been returned to individuals living in the 41st District. I’m extremely pleased with the results of this summer project.”
