Wheaton Police Department issued the following announcement on Oct. 6.

On October 6, 2020, the Wheaton Police Department was contacted in reference to a telephone scam to gain detailed personal and banking information from a resident. The caller identified themselves as the Chief of Police and advised the resident of an alleged warrant for their arrest. The telephone number was spoofed to appear to come from the police department's main telephone line. The caller then sought personal information and banking information to remedy the alleged arrest warrant. 

• If you suspect you may be a target of a scam caller, hang up and call the police department at 9-1-1 to verify the identity of the caller and legitimacy of the call. 
• If you have provided personal or banking information to an unverified caller in a similar circumstance, please call 9-1-1 to make a police report.
• The Wheaton Police Department will not make unsolicited calls to request detailed personal information such as a social security number or banking information in relationship to any civil or criminal process over the telephone.
