City of West Chicago issued the following announcement on Aug. 17.

Last week, the City of West Chicago received the following news from the West Chicago Fire Protection District. The City wishes to congratulate each of the K-9 Teams for their great achievements in receiving certifications which will allow them to provide their communities with a tremendous service for search and rescue situations.

On August 5, 2020 our very own West Chicago K-9 Search and Rescue Team FF/PM Todd Baseggio and K-9 Thor (pictured in the middle) received their North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA) certifications in tracking and obedience.

North Aurora’s K-9 Team, FF Mike McDevitt and K-9 Talon (team in the upper right) received their tracking certification, Lincolnshire-Riverwood FPD K-9 Team – FF Mike Vitale and K-9 Irie (far left) and Waukegan Fire Departments K-9 Team – FF. Valentine and K-9 Roscoe (not pictured) both received certification in tracking and obedience.

This elite team are members of the Illinois Task Force One Urban Search and Rescue Team and are going above and beyond the standard certifications to achieve the level and experience NAPWDA recognizes in an effort to offer additional services to their communities and surrounding communities.

These teams are expanding their experience and skills to go beyond tragedies involving building collapses to searching for lost children and senior citizens who have wandered away from home. These teams, working with drones, have proven very successful in locating lost citizens and expanding their potential to more than just large scale building collapses.

We would like to acknowledge all of the handlers and K-9s on their achievements.
