Illinois State House District 56 issued the following announcement on May 15
To help parents address new challenges caused by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, state Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, is encouraging families to use recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help parents talk about the coronavirus health crisis with their children.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically altered the daily life of many Illinoisans, which can cause feelings of stress or frustration, especially for children who many not fully understand the gravity of this crisis or why the stay at home order is needed,” said Mussman. “As a mother I know that parents are facing many new challenges during this time, and I encourage other parents to use CDC tips and resources to help us communicate most effectively with the children in our lives and help them understand our new normal.”
Mussman is promoting the CDC’s online resource page that provides tips to help parents, school staff and others working with children communicate about COVID-19. It emphasizes the important role trusted adults can play in helping a child understand what is happening, strategies to minimize anxiety and guidance on how to make sure your child learns everyday actions to limit the spread of germs.
“Now more than ever, it is important to prioritize mental health just as much as physical wellness and keep an eye out for signs of stress and anxiety in our children’s behavior,” continued Mussman. “This is a very difficult time for all of us, so it is critical that we continue doing our part to help save lives by staying home and keeping our families and others safe.”
Mussman represents the 56th District, which contains portions of Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove Village, Hanover Park, Roselle, Rolling Meadows and Palatine.
