Illinois' 6th Congressional District issued the following announcement on May 8.
U.S. Representative Sean Casten (IL-06) toured the Lisle Township Food Pantry to see their operation and how they are serving the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Lisle Township Food Pantry has seen an increase in demand, while at the same time changing how they serve their clients in order to avoid the spread of COVID-19. In addition to providing food, they also offer financial assistance to those who need help with utility, rental, or gas expenses.
Casten said, “It was incredibly moving to see all the hard work the Lisle Township Food Pantry staff and volunteers are putting in to keep our neighbors safe and fed during this unprecedented time. With more and more people losing their jobs and needing help to keep food on the table, our community has risen to the challenge. I’m working hard in Congress to support our food banks and struggling families, but we in the federal government certainly wouldn’t be able to do it without the amazing work happening in our neighborhood food pantries.”
Last month, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved Illinois' Disaster Distribution Plan, allowing food banks the flexibility they need to serve their communities amid the COVID-19 pandemic. After initial requests were denied, Casten joined members of the Illinois delegation urging the plan's approval. The full text of the Illinois delegation letter to the USDA can be found here.
The Lisle Township Food Pantry has a partnership with the Northern Illinois Food Bank, which benefited from the Disaster Distribution Plan.
