ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 56: Mussman Highlights Drive-Up Wi-Fi Hotspots for Students

56

Illinois State House District 56 issued the following announcement on April 29

To help ensure students have consistent internet access as they continue online learning during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, state Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, is encouraging families to use the new Wi-Fi hotspot map to find free wireless internet hotspots near them.

“I applaud educators and school administrators across the state that have modified their curriculum to allow students to continue their education through e-learning during this emergency situation,” said Mussman. “The reality is that not all students have access to a reliable internet connection, which has made remote learning a difficult transition. Thankfully, many schools, libraries and other organizations across the state are offering drive-up Wi-Fi hotspots to help students access the internet during this time.”

Mussman is highlighting Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s recently released Wi-Fi hotspot map to help support Illinois students while they continue e-learning. The resource map was spearheaded by several state agencies including the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE), the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) and the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB). As schools have been closed for the remainder of the school year, the map was created to help ensure students can complete online coursework, which typically includes video conferencing, online testing, research and assignments. Parents and guardians can drive their children to the Wi-Fi hotspots where they may use them for their schoolwork and other needs. To access the map and to find more information on resources for children and families, please visit coronavirus.illinois.gov/s/resources-for-families-and-children.

“The drive-up Wi-Fi hotspot map is an innovative solution to help address very real issues facing our students during the health pandemic,” continued Mussman. “Providing free drive-up internet hotspots will help make sure students can complete their coursework and stay on track from the comfort and safety of their vehicle.”
