BUTLER SCHOOL DISTRICT 53: e-Learning plan approved by Board

Approved

Butler School District 53 issued the following announcement on April 1.

In light of the unprecedented closing of schools across Illinois and the move to digital learning as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Butler District 53 Board of Education reviewed and approved a plan for e-Learning at its March 16 meeting.

e-Learning for District 53 students officially began March 17, 2020 and will continue over the next two weeks. Spring break is scheduled for the third week, March 30-April 3. With the Governor’s order to shelter in place and close all Illinois schools, the school buildings will be closed and e-Learning will continue through April 30.

The e-Learning plan contains expectations for teachers, students and support staff, a communications plan, lesson plan template, and digital resources. The plan ensures at least five hours of instruction/school work for students each day, non-electronic options for students who don’t have internet access and ongoing review and revision of the program as needed. Expectations for all are to maintain a routine much like the school day. For instance, teachers are asked to develop lesson plans and post them to Google Classroom or SeeSaw, online digital sharing platforms, by 8:30 a.m. each day. Likewise, students are asked to check lesson plans by 8:30 a.m. every morning and work on assignments between 9:30 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. with 45 minutes for lunch. Assignments will include a mix of digital assignments and work that does not use digital devices. Teachers and support staff will also be available for questions and support from 9:30 a.m. – 2:45 p.m. when e-Learning is in session. “Kudos to our teachers,” said Superintendent Dr. Paul O’Malley at the March 16 meeting. Our team has put together an exemplary, robust learning plan, he said.

In related news, the Board also approved a TEAM Plan, a high-level view of how the District will collaborate, communicate and take action around school closings related to pandemics.
