ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 48: Costa Howard Urges Residents Facing Layoffs Due to COVID-19 to Apply for Unemployment Benefits

Lawyer

Illinois State House District 48 issued the following announcement on March 18.

State Rep. Terra Costa Howard, D-Glen Ellyn, is urging anyone who has been laid off due to COVID-19 to apply for unemployment benefits through the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

“As we face this unprecedented public health crisis and take drastic measures to stop the spread of COVID-19, the state is doing everything it can to ease the financial strains on working

families and businesses in our communities,” Costa Howard said. “Many hardworking people are finding themselves suddenly out of work due to the temporary closures of many businesses.

These workers have bills to pay and families to support through these next critical weeks. We need to make sure they have enough money to pay for essentials to get them through this difficult period.”

The Illinois Department of Employment Security recently adopted emergency rules in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Individuals temporarily laid off due to a government-imposed or recommended quarantine may be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits.

“I want residents to know that our state and local governments are working together to help people through this crisis,” Costa Howard added. “Although I and my staff are working from home to help reduce the spread of this virus, we are available by phone or email to assist anyone who needs help.”
