Since Mayor Ruben Pineda signed the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge in 2017, West Chicago’s advocacy efforts for the Monarch butterfly have landed the community recognition from local and national organizations. Last fall, America in Bloom presented the City an award for the Best Pollinator Program at its annual symposium. In December, the City received a commendation from the DuPage Monarch Project, a partnership of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage, River Prairie Group of Sierra Club, The Conservation Foundation and Wild Ones Greater DuPage Chapter. These groups recognized West Chicago’s outstanding commitment to the preservation of Monarchs and pollinators.
The work of education and conservation continues, and on Thursday, March 26, 2020 at 7:00 p.m., the Environmental Stewardship Committee (aka Green Disciples) of the First United Methodist Church of West Chicago and People Made Visible will be hosting a free presentation of the acclaimed film, The Guardians, at Gallery 200, 103 W. Washington Street in downtown West Chicago.
The Guardians is a visually dazzling meditation on the balance between humans and nature. The Guardians poetically interweaves the lives of the threatened Monarch butterfly with an indigenous community fighting to restore the forest they nearly destroyed. Shot over three years, this cinematic journey through the butterfly dense mountaintops of Michoacán Mexico, tells the intimate story of a unique community at the front lines of conservation.
This Spanish language film with English subtitles received great interest from the public when it originally aired in West Chicago last year. The encore performance on March 26, 2020 will include a short introduction to the film and a question and answer period following the film.
The public is invited to attend and learn more about this important issue facing the environment.
