Illinois State House District 48 issued the following announcement on Dec. 30.

State Rep. Terra Costa Howard, D-Glen Ellyn, recently visited a Girl Scout troop at Glen Crest Middle School to see the outstanding result of their three-year recycling project.

“These girls have shown tremendous commitment to helping our environment,” said Costa Howard. “Through this project, they showed the power of recycling and reusing plastic fasteners, and they demonstrated the lasting positive impact that patience, hard work, and public spirit can have on our community.”

For their Bronze Award project, the members of Girl Scout Troop 50367 spent three years collecting more than 150 pounds of plastic caps and lids, which they brought to a company that “upcycles” recycled plastics into benches. The troop then donated the bench to the school.

“As a former Girl Scout and troop leader myself, I know how important it is for young women to learn effective leadership skills,” Costa Howard said. “It was a pleasure talking with these Girl Scouts and hearing their passion about protecting the environment and fighting climate change. I’m so proud of them, and I know that they will keep on working to create a greener, more sustainable world.”
