issued the following announcement on Oct. 31.
House lawmakers met today and voted to approve the rules for an impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump. Democrat Sean Casten (IL-6) voted in favor of the resolution to no one’s surprise. The freshman legislator was quick to join The Squad in calling for the President’s impeachment almost immediately after his 2018 election. Casten has even gone so far as to say, on impeachment, “what voters think shouldn’t matter.”
Jeanne Ives, Republican Candidate for Congress (IL-6), issued the following statement in response to Casten’s vote this afternoon:
“Whether or not you believe Trump should face an inquiry, the process must meet the standards of fairness and due process that most Americans - not named Sean Casten - demand.
“Secrecy, Democrats acting as judge and legal representation for witnesses they call, and indifference to the rights of the minority party are inconsistent with American notions of fair play and justice. If it is not a fair proceeding, it is an illegitimate proceeding.
“While it is true that Democrats did not offer a fair process, Congressional Republicans should have offered specific amendments to the Democrats’ draft resolution governing the process.
“As Quin Hillyer wrote in a Washington Examiner piece, ‘As it stands right now, the resolution is woefully inadequate, nonsensical, and unjust. It leaves the wrong committee largely in charge of the process; it affords Republican congressmen too little opportunity to call witnesses; it keeps too many of the proceedings behind closed doors; and it still does not provide any specifics as to when and how the president’s own counsel will be allowed to rebut allegations against him.’
“In 2020, voters will weigh in on whether they believe Sean Casten has served their interests or whether he has done nothing but play partisan politics. They will decide whether they want a representative committed to upholding due process or a Sean Casten who games the system to nullify an election result he didn’t like.”
