Illinois state Rep. Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) welcomed scores of residents from her 42nd District to a recent property tax seminar at the Wheaton Library.

“I was pleased to see more than 100 residents from the 42nd District,” Grant said in a press release. “Attendees learned how property tax bills are created, how to ensure they are receiving all eligible exemptions and how to appeal when they believe their assessment is too high.”

Grant, a member of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s Property Tax Relief Tax Force responsible for probing the root causes of high rates and proposing solutions, was joined at the forum by Milton Township Assessor Chris LeVan. The first-year lawmaker has committed to hosting a similar forum in Lisle sometime in November.

Since arriving in Springfield, Grant, also a member of the House Appropriations-Capital Committee, has made property tax reform one of her signature issues.

Upon being named to Pritzker’s task force, she stressed the growing need for taxpayers to be granted some form of relief, especially in her district's county.

“Illinoisans pay the second-highest property taxes in the entire country and DuPage County ranks second in the state for highest median property taxes,” Grant said. “DuPage County deserves property tax relief and its representatives should be at the forefront of any investigation into property tax relief.”

Having been formed in late July, the Property Tax Relief Tax Force is scheduled to submit a list of recommendations to Pritzker and the General Assembly within 90 days. In addition to members from both parties, the panel also include members from the Office of the Governor with input from the Department of Revenue, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Board of Education.

Grant’s 42nd House District includes all or parts of Carol Stream, Lisle, Warrenville, Wheaton, Winfield, West Chicago, and Naperville.
