A Republican-led effort to seek reform for the Illinois property tax system has stalled, with members of a task force refusing to advance the issue.
Among those voting against the proposal, introduced by Illinois state Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst), was state Rep. Karina Villa (D-Batavia). Mazzochi described the plan as a study of conflicts of interest in the current property tax system.
The proposal failed by a vote of 40-23.

Mazzochi said the issue must remain a focus of the state legislature and that she will not stop calling for reform. She expressed frustration with several issues of the vote, including low attendance.
“Currently this task force has 90 members," she said in a statement. "It is absurd to suggest we can’t have a subcommittee to target conflicts of interest that both sides of the aisle know exist.”
This is Villa’s first term in office. Mazzochi, who represents the 47th district, is also in her first term.
