Jeanne Ives, a candidate for Illinois' 6th District, said raising taxes won't fix the state’s financial struggles.
Ives’ focus was raised anew when Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot recently shared she’s hoping for help from Springfield to deal with the state’s $1 billion-plus shortfall. Not long ago, she floated a plan where the state would totally absorb the city’s $28 billion pension liability tab.
“It’s a lot of money that the average person owes, well over six figures,” Ives, running against U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (D-Downers Grove), told the DeKalb Times. “Lightfoot, for her to say there’s about a billion-dollar deficit, for any city over just one year, that is unbelievable. I honestly think the big thing here is when she talks about the city, she doesn’t include any other parts of government.”
Ives said it’s time voters across the state worked to bring about the change so many of them insist is now needed.
“The idea the entire state is going to pay for the malfeasance of Chicago is nonsense,” she said. “We’re already paying enough for Chicago, but not anymore. I don’t understand who gets these politicians elected to just do their bidding when they don’t care at all about the health of the city.”
Ives, who served six years as state representative in the 42nd District before narrowly losing out to then-Gov. Bruce Rauner in the Republican primary last November, recently launched her campaign against Casten (D-Downers Grove) in the 6th Congressional District.
