Lombard School District 44 issued the following announcement on July 24.
Recently, Governor Pritzker signed into law Senate Bill 28, which restores the requirement that a school day be a minimum of five instructional hours. This means the first and last days of school can no longer be half-days, as originally planned.
At the July meeting, our Board of Education approved an amended calendar that now designates Wednesday, August 21 and Friday, May 29 as full instructional days.
While it is critical that we are in compliance with the new law, I recognize this can be a disruption for your schedules, and that is why I wanted to communicate with you immediately following our Board’s approval.
Please plan on a normal dismissal time for both the first day of school – Wednesday, August 21 – as well as the last day of school, Friday, May 29.
In addition to the change to the instructional day, Senate Bill 28 does allow school districts to engage in “e-learning” days. This means school districts could have the option of providing students with virtual lessons or assignments to be completed on poor winter weather days that do not allow us to be in session. By doing so, we would not have to makeup the days at the end of the year.
We will be exploring our “e-learning” options in close collaboration with union leadership, administration and our instructional facilitators. Our goal is to determine a solution that provides for a meaningful and supportive learning experience for all students.
