Sen. Jim Oberweis (R-North Aurora) opposed a bill that would allow college and university research assistants to have access to collective bargaining.

House Bill 253 amends the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Act by providing that the term "student" within the definition of "educational employee" or "employee" excludes, where it used to include, graduate students who primarily research or teach. Sponsored by Sen. Laura Fine (D-Glenview), the bill passed with 35 Yes votes and 19 No votes and will be effective Jan. 1, 2020.

"The system we have currently works pretty well," Oberweis said on the Senate floor last week "No one is required to take a position. I would ask members of the Senate to look at additional costs for this and I urge a No vote."
