Police(1000)

City of Wheaton issued the following announcement on Feb. 6.

Forget what you've seen on TV police dramas. This is your opportunity to learn the real ins and outs of your community's police department.

The Wheaton Police Department is accepting applications now through March 4 for a 10-week Citizen's Police Academy, a chance for community members to learn the inner workings of police operations, practices and objectives. Classes will take place from 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, April 2 through June 4 at the Wheaton Police Department, 900 W Liberty Drive, and nearby locations. The academy concludes with a graduation ceremony and celebration on June 4.

The academy will consist of classroom instruction, interactive discussions and hands-on practical exercises focusing on various aspects of police work, including investigations, forensics, patrol response, traffic stops, specialty teams, critical incidents and more.

"We are excited for the community to get to know the Wheaton Police Department through the Citizen's Police Academy, " said Wheaton Police Chief Bill Murphy. "This is a great opportunity not only for the community to learn how and why police officers do things, but also for our officers and community members to connect on a personal level."

To be eligible, individuals must be at least 21 years old and live or work in the City of Wheaton. All applicants will be subjected to a criminal background investigation. The academy will be limited to 20 individuals. Classes are free and will be held at the Wheaton Police Department and nearby locations.

Applications are due by March 4. You can apply through the City's website at www.wheaton.il.us/cpa, or you can mail your application to the Wheaton Police Department, Attn: Patricia Potter, 900 W Liberty Drive, Wheaton, IL 60187. The Wheaton Police Department will notify citizens if they have been accepted to the academy by March 15.
