Incumbent Congressman Peter Roskam of Illinois’ 6th U.S. District lost Tuesday night to Democrat Sean Casten, a green energy entrepreneur with ties to House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago).
As reported by NBC Chicago 5, Casten claimed a 53-47 percent victory over the Republican, ending Roskam's 11-year career in the U.S. House of Representatives.
With 70 percent of the precincts reporting around 10 p.m., Casten had drawn 125,000 votes to Roskam’s 111,000, NBC-5 reported.
The loss came despite Roskam’s success as an architect of President Donald Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, credited for a recent nationwide economic turnaround. Some controversial statements Casten made on the campaign trail apparently failed to hurt him with voters.
