DuPage County Board Member, Tim Elliot believes that the government consolidation law passed by Gov. Bruce Rauner could greatly benefit DuPage County in regards to mosquito abatement.

Elliot explained that a new board is in the process of being created to tackle mosquito abatement.

The current board of mosquito abatement pays an environmental company to thwart off mosquitos.  Many townships all pay the same company - Clarke Environmental - individually to get rid of mosquitos.

Elliot has been a proponent of government consolidation, which could save taxpayers extra money by lowering departmental expenses by merging local units of government.

"For a long time, we've questioned why there needs to be a separate stand alone unit of government to fulfill that function," Elliot recently told the DuPage Policy Journal in regards to mosquito abatement districts. "On January 1, a new law will take effect, which was championed by Dan Cronin of Dupage County and signed by Governor Rauner and that law allows for the consolidation of the mosquito abatement district into other units of government provided the board of the mosquito abatement district votes to consolidate it into the other units of government" he said.

The current board does not support government consolidation but he hopes that the new board will be in favor of consolidating the mosquito abatement district into the Milton Township on Nov. 6.  In regards to the consolidation of the mosquito abatement district, Elliot said he approved whole heartedly.

"It will improve service and it will lead to a more coordinated effort in fighting mosquitos and it should decrease costs and most of all it will increase transparency," he said.

Elliot believes that the consolidation of mosquito abatement districts is "a big step in the right direction" and will benefit taxpayers immensely if the board approves it.
