NAPERVILLE COMMUNITY UNIT SCHOOL DISTRICT 203: Electric School Bus Rolls Through JJHS

Naperville Community Unit School District 203 recently issued the following announcement.

School buses come and go at Jefferson Jr. High on a daily basis. But seventh graders had the opportunity to view what could be the future of school buses- one that’s entirely electric!

IC Bus, a subsidiary of Lisle-based Navistar, is the leading manufacturer for commercial trucks, buses, and engines. As part of their nationwide tour, they brought their new electric school bus and engineers to JJHS so students could get an up close glimpse of STEM in action.

“This is probably going to be a school bus these kids will end up riding. Definitely their kids,” said Trish Reed, vice president and general manager, IC Bus.

Students in JJHS’s Project Lead the Way spoke with engineers and toured the bus- which has the floor taken out to showcase the battery.

“It has a hood, but there’s nothing under it. The hood also has no grill because it needs no air flow,” said Reed.

The Naperville North Huskie Robotics Team was also on hand to promote robotics and innovation at the junior high level.

This visit was a partnership between Navistar and the Naperville Education Foundation. “Our mission is to encourage creativity and innovation in our students,” said Wendy Goettsch, Executive Director for NEF. “We do that by creating opportunities like today where our students get to see up close examples of innovation.”

Navistar is still in the development phase for electric busses, but say they could be ready to pick up students and hit the roads by 2020. #empower203
