City of Elmhurst Police Department issued the following announcement on Aug. 20.

The Elmhurst Police Department continues to take part in a year-long traffic enforcement grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The goal of this grant is to save lives by reducing fatal and serious injury crashes through additional enforcement of DUI and seatbelt laws.

The next campaign of this grant will begin on Monday, August 20th and continue through the Labor Day holiday weekend. This grant allows extra officers to be on patrol, watching for impaired drivers, distracted drivers, and seatbelt violations. The majority of this extra enforcement will take place in the overnight hours, which is statistically the most dangerous time to be on the roadway.

In addition to increased patrols, a roadside safety checkpoint will take place on Friday, August 31st, 2018, from 11:30 PM through 3:00 AM Saturday morning. This type of checkpoint has proven to be a significant deterrent to impaired driving. During the checkpoint, motorists will be stopped at a predetermined interval and checked for violations; anyone planning to consume alcohol should make alternate travel arrangements. Citizens are also encouraged to contact police if they see a vehicle that appears to be driven by an intoxicated driver.

As always, motorists are encouraged to drive safely, pay attention to the road, and buckle up!
