Artist creates a compelling piece of original art for West Chicago
The West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission is promoting a simple yet powerful message through a new piece of public art which is to be dedicated on the grounds of the West Chicago Public Library in the coming days – love even more. Renowned Chicago-based artist Matthew Hoffman visited West Chicago recently to add his signature message to the window of Gallery 200, located at 103 West Washington Street, in anticipation of the installation of his 9’ metal sculpture.
Commission Chairperson Anni Holm was on hand to welcome Matthew to the community and the Gallery and to provide assistance as he applied his sprawling message that encourages, inspires and promotes his upcoming work which will be dedicated at a public celebration later this summer.
“We are so thrilled to be working with Matthew on a piece of public art for West Chicago,” said Holm. “He is an iconic Chicago artist with installations of his You Are Beautiful collection in over thirty locations throughout the Chicago area. Now he is bringing a boldly beautiful original sculpture to West Chicago.” Hoffman’s body of work includes installations for the City of Chicago, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, and Albright Knox Gallery.
According to him, the concept for the West Chicago piece evolved as a result of watching the news and hearing about the things happening all around the world. “I can’t help but think that things would be a little better, if we would simply love each other even more,” Hoffman said. “The most important thing about any community is being there for each other. Hopefully, this piece helps inspire or simply remind all of us to be there for each other.”
That is a sentiment that resonated with members of the Commission who want to see meaningful art that reflects the shared culture of the community and encourages critical thinking.
The City of West Chicago and the West Chicago Public Library plan to host a public dedication and reception for love even more later this summer and will provide information as it becomes available.
