Buggs signs letter of intent with Indiana State University

DeKalb High School track star Brimonet Buggs has signed a letter of intent to attend Indiana State University next season, the school announced in a recent signing day ceremony in which seven other DeKalb athletes were also recognized.

A 12-time All-Conference and six-time All-State athlete, Buggs’ full magic was on display during the recent IHSA Girls Track and Field State Meet at Eastern Illinois University, where she led the Barbs to a first-place finish in the 4x200 with a school record time of 1 minute, 38.59 seconds.

Buggs also finished fourth in the 200 with a time of 24.75 seconds and anchored the 4x100 relay team to a second-place finish with a time of 47.26 seconds.

“I never actually thought I would get this far,” Buggs told the Daily Chronicle. “Being a state champ, I never would’ve expected this to happen when I started running my freshman year. It’s amazing how much we’ve accomplished at DeKalb.”

DeKalb coach Tywon Green said such feats are what he came to expect from his senior star.

“If the race is close for Bri, watch out because you’re not going to catch her,” he told the Daily Chronicle. “She’s one of those athletes that don’t come around too often. Her speed is what separates her from the rest of the pack. Bri helped set a lot of new standards for DeKalb High School.”

Other DeKalb signees included Tremaine Thomas (Robert Morris University, football), Devin Williams (College of DuPage, football), Jenna Levine (Wartburg College, softball), Marcus Bobo (Kishwaukee College, basketball), Mikey Albert (Kishwaukee College, basketball), Avery Mertz (Kishwaukee College, soccer), Emma Rourke (Kishwaukee College, soccer), Jessa Henry (Davis and Elkins College, volleyball), Anna Friedlund (Waubonsee Community College, volleyball) and Kaylee McFarland (Aurora University, bowling).
